According to the publication, in early January, against the backdrop of internal tensions and threats from the United States, Khamenei instructed his associate Ali Larijani to organize the management of the country. The NYT notes that since then, 67-year-old Larijani, who previously held important positions in the security system, has effectively become one of the main figures in the leadership, overshadowing President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Khamenei also pointed to the need to ensure stability of power in the face of potential external threats, including military actions and assassination attempts on the top leadership. In particular, he established several levels of succession for key state and military positions.

As the publication reports, leaders were asked to select up to four possible successors, and decision-making powers were delegated to a narrow circle of trusted individuals in case communication with the Supreme Leader is lost or in the event of his death.

Earlier, the Axios portal reported that the United States is considering various pressure measures on Iran, including the possibility of eliminating the Supreme Leader and his son.
