The director of the Louvre has resigned. Four months ago, the museum was robbed of 88 million euros

Laurence de Car
In an interview with Le Figaro, de Car explained her decision to resign, stating that continuing her work did not allow her to overcome the barriers to modernizing and transforming the museum.

She noted that during her tenure, which began in September 2021, she managed to restore the Louvre's momentum for development. “I could be wrong, but I am confident that I contributed to the museum's progress,” said de Car.

Her resignation came four months after the robbery that occurred on October 19, 2025, when masked criminals broke into the museum in the middle of the day, stealing nine items from the imperial collection. Among the stolen items were jewelry belonging to Napoleon and his wife Josephine, with the theft estimated to have caused 88 million euros in damage. Four suspects have been detained in connection with the robbery, but the jewels have still not been found.

Interestingly, immediately after the robbery, Laurence de Car had already attempted to resign, but at that time her request was rejected by Emmanuel Macron.
