Last year, South Korea recorded a rise in birth rates, which became the highest in the last 15 years, according to official information from the Ministry of Statistics. The birth rate increased by 6%, marking a record since 2010. Thus, 2025 became the second consecutive year with positive dynamics in this area.
Park Hyun Jung, an official representative of the ministry, noted that one of the key factors contributing to the increase in birth rates is the rise in the number of registered marriages. “From April 2024 to December 2025, the number of marriages increased for 21 consecutive months. We believe this is related to couples who postponed starting a family due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” she commented.
As a result, the birth rate in South Korea, which in recent years has remained one of the lowest in the world, has significantly improved. If in 2023 it reached a record low of 0.72, then in 2024 this figure rose to 0.75, and in 2025 it amounted to 0.8. Nevertheless, this is still significantly below the threshold of 2.1, necessary to maintain the current population of the country, which stands at 51 million people.
