President Donald Trump called on several countries in Europe and Asia to strengthen the protection of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, which is currently under threat from Iran, as reported by DW.
In his message on Truth Social on Saturday, March 14, he expressed hope that countries such as China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom would send their warships to this strategically important area to eliminate the threat posed by the "completely decapitated" Iranian army.
Trump noted that the US has already "destroyed 100% of Iran's military capability," however, according to him, Tehran is still capable of launching drones or missiles along this important maritime route. "We will blow the coastline to smithereens with bombs and constantly destroy Iranian boats and ships. Soon the Strait of Hormuz will be open, safe, and free," he added.
It was previously reported that Italy, France, and Greece have deployed their warships in the Red Sea as part of the European naval mission Aspides. However, according to the British newspaper Financial Times, no European fleet is currently prepared to escort vessels through the strait, fearing escalation of the conflict.
Furthermore, as noted by the publication, several European countries have begun preliminary negotiations with Tehran regarding an agreement that would ensure the safe passage of their vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. France and Italy are mentioned in this context; however, Rome has denied information about negotiations with Iran, while Paris has refrained from commenting. At the same time, according to sources, there are no guarantees of successful progress in the negotiations, but Iran is willing to discuss the topic in general.
