The operation was conducted using a Russian military aircraft
According to information obtained from a high-ranking source close to the Supreme Leader of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei, his evacuation to Moscow was carried out as part of a secret operation for treatment. This information was disclosed in an interview with the Kuwaiti newspaper Al Jarida. The new leader of Iran, who has not appeared in public since the onset of military actions by Israel and the United States, was injured on the first day of the conflict — February 28, which required his hospitalization and constant medical supervision.
The source reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed to send Khamenei to Moscow for treatment during a phone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian last week. That same evening, the Supreme Leader was evacuated aboard a Russian military aircraft. Upon arrival in Moscow, he underwent a "successful" operation and is currently receiving treatment at a specialized clinic located within one of Putin's residences.
According to the source, the reasons for Mojtaba's evacuation to the Russian capital are not only related to the difficulties of providing necessary care amid the conflict but also to threats from Israel regarding his elimination. Iranian intelligence services express concerns about a possible leak of information regarding the whereabouts of Ali Khamenei's son through doctors who might be involved in his treatment.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry previously confirmed the existence of an injury to the new leader but noted that his condition does not raise serious concerns. Three sources from The New York Times within the Iranian government reported injuries to the leg area. Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth claimed that Mojtaba is "injured, disfigured, and hiding," while U.S. President Donald Trump questioned his viability.
The British tabloid The Sun, citing an Iranian source, reported that the new leader may have "lost one or both legs" and is reportedly in a coma.
Trump has also persistently urged Khamenei to surrender and called him "unacceptable" for the United States. He emphasized that he is not ready to accept the successor of the slain ayatollah and pointed out that he must personally participate in the appointment of the new leader of the country; otherwise, he "won't last long."
