Iran-linked hackers hacked the email of the FBI director

On March 28, Deutsche Welle reported that hackers, presumably working for Iran, had hacked the personal email account of Cash Patel, the FBI director, and published his correspondence and private photos.

The group known as Handala Hack Team claimed responsibility for this cyberattack. On their website, they noted that Patel had become one of their "successfully hacked victims" and released a number of personal photos along with excerpts from his email correspondence.

The FBI confirmed that the hack did indeed occur. Agency spokesperson Ben Williamson stated that steps had been taken to mitigate potential risks, adding that the published materials have "historical value" and do not contain classified information of national importance.

As a result of the leak, fragments of more than 300 emails, presumably dated from 2010 to 2019, containing both personal and business correspondence, were made public.

DW notes that it is currently impossible to verify the authenticity of the published data. However, the email address provided by the hackers matches one that has already appeared in previous leaks documented by cybersecurity experts.

Western experts suggest that Handala may be one of the aliases used by Iranian cyber intelligence agencies. Previously, this group had reported cyberattacks on various American and international companies.

Experts emphasize that such actions may be part of a strategy to exert pressure on American officials and demonstrate the vulnerability of their personal data against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the Middle East region.
