According to NBC, Trump privately expresses doubts about Canada's ability to protect its borders from potential threats from Russia and China.

However, sources from NBC claim that U.S. officials emphasize that the president does not plan a "purchase of Canada." Instead, options for increasing military cooperation between the U.S. and Canada in defense in the Arctic are being discussed.

Additionally, it is clarified that the issue of deploying U.S. troops on Canada's northern border is currently not on the agenda.

One anonymous U.S. official noted, "The world does not view Canada as a serious force in defense," highlighting Trump's concerns.

In 2025, commenting on disagreements over potential tariffs on Canadian goods, Trump referred to then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as "the governor of the great state of Canada." Later, he suggested that Canada could avoid trade tariffs and receive military protection if it became part of the U.S.
