The European Union is preparing sanctions against the USA over Greenland

Information from The Telegraph

European countries hope that strengthening their positions in the Arctic will convince Donald Trump to abandon plans to annex Greenland. If Trump opposes NATO's deployment on the island, the European Union is ready to impose sanctions, as reported by RBC, citing The Telegraph.

According to potential restrictions, European measures could affect companies such as Meta, Google, Microsoft, and X. These organizations may face a ban on operations in Europe, similar to American financial institutions. A harsher scenario includes the withdrawal of American troops from European bases.

Greenland, let us remind you, is an autonomous territory that is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Since 1953, it has ceased to be a colony and has become part of the kingdom. In 1979, the island gained home rule status, and in 2009, its autonomy was significantly expanded for more effective self-governance.

The Telegraph also mentions plans to deploy NATO forces in Greenland. According to sources, the UK is negotiating with European partners on this project, which is still in the early stages of development.

Let’s not forget that after returning to the White House in early 2025, Trump repeatedly raised the issue of including Greenland in the United States. In an interview with The Atlantic on January 4, he stated that the island is "absolutely necessary" for Washington's defense needs.

The day before, he expressed readiness to take measures regarding Greenland even without the consent of its population to prevent increased influence from Russia or China in the region.

On January 10, The Mail on Sunday reported that Trump ordered the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) to develop an invasion plan for Greenland. However, U.S. military leaders opposed this idea, claiming that such an operation would be illegal and would not receive support in Congress.

At the end of December 2025, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, appointed by Trump as a special envoy for Greenland, made a statement about the island. He noted that the U.S. administration is not seeking "conquest," but offers "economic support and protection."
