In light of recent statements by U.S. President Donald Trump, several European countries are actively discussing the possibility of deploying NATO military forces on the territory of Greenland. This decision could demonstrate a unified position of the alliance and possibly convince Trump to abandon the idea of annexing the island, reports The Telegraph.

According to the publication, the United Kingdom is consulting with allies regarding the potential deployment of NATO forces on this strategically important island. This issue was discussed at a meeting of allies in Brussels on January 8.

As noted by The Telegraph, the participants of the meeting tasked the Supreme Allied Commander of NATO in Europe to consider various options for ensuring security in the Arctic region.

Furthermore, according to the newspaper, the European Union is developing potential sanctions against American companies in case Trump rejects the proposal to deploy NATO in Greenland. The restrictions could affect companies such as Meta, Google, Microsoft, X, as well as financial institutions from the U.S.

It is worth reminding that Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed the need for Greenland to join the U.S. During his first presidential term, he even suggested buying the island, and in March 2025, he mentioned the possibility of its annexation, threatening Copenhagen with the imposition of trade tariffs in case of refusal.

Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark. In 1951, Washington and Copenhagen signed a Treaty on the Defense of Greenland, which further solidifies the U.S. commitments to defend the island against potential threats.
