According to The Times, the U.S. has military resources for a potential takeover of this island territory. However, such an operation against a NATO ally could negatively impact the alliance and provoke resistance among the local population.
The publication also considers the option of signing a Compact of Free Association, under which the U.S. would provide financial assistance in exchange for taking on defense responsibilities, while allowing the country to maintain internal self-governance.
Among other proposals is the possibility of purchasing Greenland from Denmark. A scenario may also be considered where the island remains part of Denmark but with an increased American military presence on its territory.
Analysts are confident that the most likely development will not be direct military intervention, but rather a combination of economic leverage, political influence, and diplomatic efforts.
