The U.S. Congress has introduced a bill concerning the annexation of Greenland, which proposes granting this region state status. The text of the document is available on the official website of the House of Representatives.

Congressman Randy Fine, who is the initiator of this bill, noted: “Control over Greenland provides access to critically important Arctic shipping routes and ensures the security of the United States.” He emphasized that America cannot allow such territories to be under the control of regimes that do not share its values and threaten its security.

The explanatory note to the bill states that the President of the United States will be authorized to take “necessary measures” to make Greenland part of American territory. Congress will also need to receive a full report on the necessary legislative changes to complete the annexation process.

Previously, during his first presidential term, Donald Trump expressed the possibility of annexing Greenland, claiming that the U.S. would “somehow” gain control over this region. He even suggested buying the island, and in March 2025 stated that annexation was possible, threatening Copenhagen with the imposition of tariffs in case of refusal.

Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark. In 1951, the U.S. and Denmark signed the Treaty for the Protection of Greenland, which, in addition to NATO obligations, includes the protection of the island from potential threats.
