Trump: The US may strike drug cartels in Mexico

The president did not specify when the attacks might occur

In an interview on the Hannity program on Fox News, US President Donald Trump announced plans for American troops to begin ground operations against drug cartels in Mexico.

According to Trump, maritime drug shipments from Venezuela have been almost completely halted, and now the focus will shift to combating land routes from Mexico, as reported by sources at Meduza.

“We have cut off 97% of drug trafficking by sea, and now we are starting to act against the cartels on land. These groups control Mexico, and the sight of what is happening in that country is horrifying. They are responsible for 250,000 to 300,000 lives lost in our country every year,” Trump noted.

The president did not disclose details about the timing and scale of the proposed attacks.

This interview followed a recent US military operation in Venezuela, during which American special forces captured President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores. Washington accuses Maduro of drug trafficking and illegal possession of weapons, while his wife is accused of drug trafficking and corruption. Their case is being heard in New York, with Maduro denying all charges.

Prior to the operation in Venezuela, American forces had already struck vessels that, according to the US, were involved in drug transportation. According to information from American officials, more than 100 people have died as a result of these attacks since September.

Upon returning to the White House, Trump designated six Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, which, according to Euronews, was seen by Mexican authorities as a potential justification for military intervention.

It should be noted that any military actions on Mexican territory without the consent of the Mexican government would be considered a violation of international law and could constitute an unprecedented act of aggression against a US ally and important trading partner, as emphasized by Euronews. Recently, Trump stated that in making decisions, he relies not on international norms but on his own moral convictions.
