Participants of the rally, holding flags of Denmark and Greenland, gathered outside the Copenhagen City Hall, forming a "sea" of red and white colors and shouting "Kalaalllit Nunaat!" — the name of the largest Arctic island in the Inuit language.

The protests took place the day after U.S. President Donald Trump announced the possibility of imposing tariffs on goods from countries that oppose his plans to control Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark rich in natural resources.

The organizers of the marches emphasized that they aim to "send a clear and unified signal of respect for Greenland's democracy and fundamental human rights."

It is also reported that a similar event is planned in Nuuk — the capital of Greenland — in protest against "illegal attempts by the U.S. to establish control over the island."

The demonstrations coincided with a visit to Denmark by a U.S. Congressional delegation representing both political parties. American lawmakers indicated that many of them do not support the hardline rhetoric of the Trump administration regarding Greenland.

Democratic Senator Chris Coons noted that there are currently no immediate security threats to Greenland that could justify the White House's position. His concerns are primarily related to future risks in the Arctic arising from climate change and the reduction of sea ice.

Earlier, U.S. presidential advisor Stephen Miller claimed in an interview with Fox News that Denmark is not large enough to defend its Arctic territory.

Moreover, Euronews reports that Trump has repeatedly criticized Denmark for insufficient efforts to ensure the security of Greenland, even though the island, as part of Denmark, is under NATO protection.

According to polls conducted in January 2025, 85% of Greenland's residents oppose joining the U.S., while only 6% support the idea.

On January 17, Trump announced the introduction of 10% tariffs starting February 1 and 25% tariffs starting June 1 for eight European countries that Washington claims "oppose U.S. control over Greenland." This list includes Denmark, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland.
