Thousands of people, including Danes and Greenlanders, took to the streets of Copenhagen and Nuuk, protesting against the threats from Donald Trump, who expressed intentions to acquire Greenland.
Protesters held signs reading "Hands off Greenland" and flags of the island.
Additionally, the Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, participated in the action.
"Today, many chose to participate in demonstrations in support of Greenland. It is wonderful to see the Danish and Greenlandic flags waving together," wrote Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on her Instagram.
It should be noted that a bill regarding the "annexation of Greenland and granting it state status" is already being considered in the U.S. Congress.
The explanatory note to this document states that it allows the U.S. president to take "any necessary measures" to acquire Greenland as its territory.
Previously, Trump claimed that the United States would gain control over the island "one way or another." During his first presidential term, he proposed to buy Greenland, and in March 2025, he stated that it could be annexed by threatening Copenhagen with trade tariffs in case of refusal.
Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. In 1951, Washington and Copenhagen signed a treaty for the protection of the island, which complements their allied commitments under NATO. According to this agreement, the U.S. committed to defending Greenland against potential aggression.
