Annexation of Greenland. The Foreign Minister cried during the interview
On the air of the KNR radio station, the Foreign Minister of Greenland, Vivian Motfeldt, could not hold back her tears while commenting on a recent meeting at the White House, where the fate of the island was discussed.

During the interview, she shared her feelings after negotiations with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, which did not lead to an agreement with the United States.

“These days have been particularly hard. We prepared, but the pressure is only increasing. We are doing our best to ensure safety for the residents of Greenland,” she said, unable to hold back her tears.

According to Motfeldt, the “increasing pressure on Greenland in recent months” is causing fear and uncertainty about the future among the island's population.

Recently, Denmark and Greenland held negotiations with the United States but were unable to reach an agreement on issues concerning the future of the island.

Lars Løkke Rasmussen, commenting on the results of the meeting with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President J.D. Vance, noted that “the position of the U.S. could not be changed” and emphasized that the president is striving for the annexation of Greenland.

As a result of the discussions, it was decided to create a working group for a detailed analysis of issues related to the fate of the island. The ministers characterized the meeting as “frank but constructive.”

It should be noted that Denmark and the U.S. have “fundamentally opposing views” regarding Greenland. The Danish Foreign Minister called the demand to transfer the island to the U.S. completely unacceptable.

It is also worth reminding that a bill on the “annexation of Greenland and granting it state status” has been introduced in Congress, which would allow the U.S. president to take necessary steps to acquire the island.

Previously, Donald Trump stated that the U.S. would “somehow” gain control over Greenland and also proposed to buy the island during his first presidential term. In March 2025, he expressed confidence in the possibility of annexation, threatening Copenhagen with the introduction of trade tariffs in case of refusal.

Greenland is an autonomous territory within Denmark. In 1951, the U.S. and Denmark signed a Treaty for the Protection of the Island, under which the U.S. commits to protect Greenland from potential threats.
