In response to the growing tension surrounding Greenland, caused by claims from the United States and threats from President Donald Trump, seven European countries have decided to establish a military presence on the island. Germany, Sweden, France, the Netherlands, Canada, Denmark, and Norway have taken this step, as reported by Politico.

In particular, the German Bundeswehr has sent a group of 13 military personnel to Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. The German Ministry of Defense clarifies that this measure is aimed at exploring the possibilities of military participation in ensuring the security of Denmark, including aspects of maritime surveillance.

Norway has also decided to send two of its soldiers to the island, as reported by an official representative of the military department.

It is worth noting that a bill concerning the annexation of Greenland and granting it state status is already being considered in the U.S. Congress. According to the information contained in the document, the President of the United States is granted the authority to take "any necessary steps" to acquire the territory.

Donald Trump previously stated that the United States would "somehow" gain control over Greenland, expressing an intention to buy the island. In March 2025, he also expressed the possibility of annexation, threatening Copenhagen with the imposition of trade tariffs in case of refusal.

Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark. In 1951, a treaty was signed between Washington and Copenhagen that obligates the U.S. to protect Greenland from potential aggression, in addition to NATO alliance obligations.
