The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated that he may impose tariffs on European countries if they do not support his ambitious plans for Greenland. He referred to himself as the "king of tariffs" and emphasized the importance of this island for the national security of the U.S.

“I can apply tariffs to countries that do not support us on the issue of Greenland because this island is really necessary for us,” Trump noted while speaking at the White House. He also mentioned how he had previously used tariffs to compel other countries to cooperate in reducing drug prices in America.

These remarks came after several NATO countries deployed military forces to Greenland.

It is important to remind that a bill has already been introduced in Congress proposing to annex Greenland and grant it state status. The document states that it gives the president the right to take "necessary steps" to acquire the island.

Earlier, Trump stated that the U.S. would "somehow" gain control over Greenland. During his first term in office, he proposed buying the island and in March 2025, he again expressed confidence in the possibility of its annexation, threatening Copenhagen with trade tariffs in case of refusal.

Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark. In 1951, the U.S. and Denmark signed a Treaty for the protection of the island, which obligates America to ensure its defense against potential threats.
