Starting from February 1, 2025, as Donald Trump announced on his social network Truth Social, the United States will impose additional tariffs on goods from eight European countries, including the United Kingdom and Denmark, in response to disputes over Greenland.

The President emphasized that these tariffs will remain in effect until a complete agreement on the acquisition of Greenland by the United States is reached.

A 10% tariff will be levied on goods entering the U.S. from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland. Starting June 1, this percentage will increase to 25%.

Trump also noted that China and Russia have an interest in Greenland, while Denmark cannot do anything about it. According to him, only the U.S. under his leadership can ensure the protection of this strategically important region: “No one will be able to encroach on this sacred land, as the national security of both the United States and the entire world is at stake,” he added.

The President also expressed concern about the “unknown objectives” of countries like Denmark and Norway, which he believes are playing a “very dangerous game” regarding Greenland.

Trump called for decisive action to quickly resolve this “potentially dangerous situation.”

In light of these statements, protests against the U.S. President's initiatives took place in Denmark and on the island itself.

Additionally, a bill regarding the “annexation of Greenland and granting it state status” is already being considered in Congress, which would allow the President to take necessary measures to acquire this region.

Previously, Trump emphasized that the U.S. would gain control over Greenland “in any case,” and even during his first term, he proposed buying the island. In March 2025, he mentioned the possibility of annexation, threatening Copenhagen with the imposition of trade tariffs in case of refusal.

It should be noted that Greenland is an autonomous territory within Denmark. In 1951, Washington and Copenhagen signed a Treaty for the protection of the island, under which the U.S. committed to defend Greenland against potential threats.
