As reported by Euronews, the Trump administration has announced the introduction of new 10% tariffs on goods from eight European countries, starting February 1. In response, the heads of the European Commission, including Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, emphasized the unity of the EU in defending its sovereignty.

The publication also reminds that last year an agreement was signed between the EU and the US, under which tariffs on European goods increased to 15%, while tariffs on American industrial goods were reduced to zero. This agreement was seen as the price for US involvement in issues concerning Ukraine and maintaining global stability.

Chairman of the European Council Antonio Costa stated that he would take on the coordination of actions among EU leaders in response to current threats.

Although the European Commission is responsible for trade policy, the White House may target specific EU countries by selecting certain goods and sectors for tariff increases.

This conflict has also raised the question of the possible application of the counter-coercion mechanism, known as the trade "bazooka," which was adopted in 2023. It allows the EU to restrict third countries' access to public procurement and the single European market in response to political blackmail.

Meanwhile, protests against US attempts to acquire Greenland are taking place in Copenhagen. A delegation from the US Congress, opposing Trump's initiatives, has also arrived in the Danish capital.
