As reported by Politico, Europe is also interested in appointing a special representative to negotiate with Russia on issues related to the resolution of the conflict in Ukraine. Finnish President Alexander Stubb is being considered as a potential candidate.

European Union countries are actively discussing the possibility of appointing such a representative who could establish a dialogue with the Russian side. Political sources mention both Stubb and former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi among the potential contenders.

This initiative arises against the backdrop of statements from European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, about the necessity of dialogue with Russia.

Sources in the EU told Politico that the discussion of the idea of appointing a special representative has become relevant again. There are concerns within the European Union that without participation in negotiations with Russia and Ukraine, they may lose the opportunity to defend their interests. This concern is heightened by the active diplomatic efforts of U.S. President Donald Trump.

“In recent days, Macron has been actively emphasizing the importance of having some influence in negotiations, especially considering the bilateral discussions between the U.S. and Russia. Meloni fully supports this position, realizing the benefits that can be achieved from such meetings. However, in the capitals of EU countries, there is a growing awareness of the need to choose between active participation and a lack thereof,” said an unnamed official from France.

However, many aspects of this initiative remain unclear: what status the new representative will have, who they will report to, whether it will be a formal or informal position, and whether they will represent the European Union directly or a "coalition of the willing."

Italy is putting forward the candidacy of Mario Draghi, while the EU is also considering Alexander Stubb as a suitable candidate. The advantage of appointing the sitting president is his relative independence in his statements, as well as his established connections with Donald Trump, thanks to their shared golf outings.
