- On February 28, 2026, the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry Erlis Akunbekov conducted a working trip to the Chuy region, as reported by the press service of the Ministry of Agriculture.

The main objective of the visit was to study the current state of water management facilities, as well as to assess the progress of ongoing reconstruction and construction works aimed at providing farmers with the necessary irrigation water.

During his trip to the Moscow district, the minister visited the Spartak Reservoir and the Ak-Suy distribution drainage network. The managers of these facilities provided information about the technical characteristics of the structures, their siltation, and operational efficiency.

Then, in the Jayil district, Akunbekov familiarized himself with the operations of the Kara-Balta and Stepninsk reservoirs, which provide irrigation for thousands of hectares of agricultural land.

During the trip, it was noted that many reservoirs had not been cleaned for nearly 50 years, which negatively affected their design capacity. For example, one reservoir designed for 4.3 million cubic meters currently holds only about 2 million cubic meters and irrigates 2,100 hectares of land. Additional water volumes come from the Big Chuy Canal and the Kara-Balta River.

As a result of the visit, directives were issued for the modernization of irrigation infrastructure, phased cleaning and reconstruction of reservoirs, as well as for improving the efficiency of water resource use.
