The population of snow leopards in Kyrgyzstan has exceeded 550 individuals, - Ministry of Natural Resources

At the meeting of the Committee of the Jogorku Kenesh on agricultural policy, water resources, subsoil use, ecology, and environmental protection on March 9, Asel Raimkulova, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision, reported that the population of the snow leopard (Irbis) in Kyrgyzstan has exceeded 550 individuals. Asel Raimkulova shared information about the ministry's work for the year 2025.

The Deputy Minister noted that the snow leopard has received the status of a national symbol of Kyrgyzstan, and a logo and usage guidelines have been developed for it. The country has also adopted a National Action Plan for the Conservation of the Snow Leopard until 2030.

As part of the activities to protect this rare predator and improve the condition of protected natural areas, an ecological corridor "Ak Ilbirs" has been created, which connects the territories of the Khan-Teniri, Sarychat-Ertash, and Naryn reserves, covering an area of approximately 792,000 hectares.

According to Raimkulova, the conducted activities have contributed to the increase in the population of the snow leopard in the republic.
