Among more than 1 million cars in the country, 80% are older than 15 years

Representatives of the Kyrgyz government have proposed a ban on the registration and re-registration of cars that are not equipped with catalytic converters. This was reported by Nursultan Tashybek uulu, head of the air protection department at the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision, at a recent briefing.

According to him, an interdepartmental commission currently operates to improve air quality in the country, and its powers were expanded in 2025.

One of the commission's recommendations was to regulate the vehicle fleet in the republic.

“Old cars are one of the main causes of air pollution. In our country, there are over 1 million registered vehicles, and more than 80% of them are older than 15 years. In Bishkek, there are over 400,000 such cars. Over time, the catalytic converter, which is responsible for filtering exhaust gases, fails. We are conducting raids to identify points that buy catalytic converters. It is important for every citizen to understand that the presence of this device is mandatory,” noted Nursultan Tashybek uulu.

The catalytic converter should become as integral a part of the car as the wheels.

“Currently, mandatory technical inspections apply only to vehicles transporting goods and passengers, while other cars do not undergo such checks. If inspections were conducted for all vehicles, we could annually check for the presence of catalytic converters. Therefore, we are looking for alternative solutions. For example, we plan to check for catalytic converters during the registration and re-registration of vehicles. If there is no catalytic converter, registration will not be carried out. For now, this is just a proposal, but we intend to bring it up for discussion in the first quarter of next year,” he added.
