At a meeting of the permanent commission of the Bishkek City Council on the issues of improving newly annexed territories, Deputy Kazybek Ergeshov proposed the necessity of holding elections for neighborhood representatives and their official funding.

He noted that for three years, the annexed districts have remained without elected neighborhood representatives.

“There are previously elected representatives, but they act as activists without any payment. These people play a key role in the life of the districts. Neighborhood representatives represent the interests of the population, ensuring communication with the municipal territorial units, deputies, and akimats. The issue of elections and salaries should have been resolved last year. We cannot force them to work on a voluntary basis indefinitely,” Ergeshov expressed his concern.

City hall officials reported that a scheme for the neighborhoods is currently being developed. “After this work is completed, we will hold elections and set salaries. At the moment, our main task is to finalize the scheme,” noted one of the city hall representatives.

Ergeshov added that deputies will soon be reviewing the local budget, and action needs to be taken more quickly.

“Have you submitted requests for funding for the neighborhood representatives? If not, they will again be left without salaries. The districts will find themselves in a difficult situation. We need to instruct to include a project for elections and funding for neighborhood representatives in the budget,” the deputy concluded.
