Deputy of the Jogorku Kenesh justified his proposal to sell water to neighbors

Representatives of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan expressed dissatisfaction with his statements

At a recent meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh, Deputy Umbetaly Kydyraiev commented on his idea of introducing a fee for neighboring countries for water or, at the very least, receiving compensation for the maintenance and restoration of hydroelectric power stations and reservoirs.

Kydyraiev noted that his remarks caused misunderstanding in neighboring countries, where they were interpreted differently, often with the help of opposition forces. “Friends from Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan write to me, asking questions about my words. In fact, this is related to the geopolitical situation. When we transfer water according to our agreements, we receive concessions in other areas,” he explained.

It is worth reminding that at the previous committee meeting, the deputy mentioned that over the past few years, Kyrgyzstan has been losing almost 80% of the water from its reservoirs, directing it to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, while not receiving economic compensation for these losses.

“I reviewed the data and found that almost 80% of the water from our reservoirs goes to neighboring states. At the same time, the reservoirs require repairs, maintenance, and strengthening of dams. Our neighbors should compensate for these losses. This is a norm recognized by international law. For example, the USA pays Canada for water, and Germany pays Sweden,” the deputy added.
