Sergey Vakunov, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Russia in Bishkek, stated that the current capabilities of the airbase in Kyrgyzstan are sufficient to ensure the security of the CSTO member states. He shared this information in an interview, noting that the expansion of the base is not required.

Vakunov emphasized that, according to experts, the airbase in its current state is effectively fulfilling its tasks of ensuring security on the southern flank. "The servicemen stationed in Kyrgyzstan are successfully carrying out their duties, assisting local law enforcement agencies in the fight against terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking, and organized crime," he added.

The diplomat also noted that Russian military personnel are actively cooperating with units from other CSTO member states, conducting joint operations. In particular, they participated in the command-staff exercises "Rubezh-2025," which took place in September of last year in the Issyk-Kul region.

Sergey Vakunov also confirmed that Russia will continue to invest in equipping the airbase with modern weapons and equipment. He reminded that the combined Russian airbase in Kant and Karakol was established more than 20 years ago at the request of the Kyrgyz leadership in response to threats from international terrorists from Afghanistan and has since played an important role in ensuring security in the region and supporting the CSTO Rapid Reaction Forces.
