The Bishkek City Court has issued a ruling regarding journalist Kanyshai Mamyrkulova
Court Ruling: Acquittal on One Charge and Conviction on Another
A hearing took place in the Bishkek City Court regarding journalist Kanyshai Mamyrkulova.
The court issued a verdict of acquittal on Article 330 of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic, concerning incitement of hatred. However, under Article 278 of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic regarding calls for mass riots, she was found guilty. The probation period was reduced to three years.
Thus, while part of the charges were dropped, another remained in force with a change in the sentence duration.
The journalist was detained on March 20, 2025. She was charged under the articles "Calls for Mass Riots" and "Incitement of Racial, Ethnic, National, Religious, or Interregional Hatred" of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic.
According to the investigation, she allegedly spread false information about the situation on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border, which could have provoked destabilization in the country. The Main Internal Affairs Department noted that a forensic linguistic examination confirmed the presence of calls for violence, which became the basis for initiating a criminal case.
The court initially sentenced Mamyrkulova to six years of imprisonment but applied probation supervision for four years.
