In 2025, the United States faced a record outflow of population: for the first time since the Great Depression, the number of Americans leaving exceeded the number arriving.

According to a study by the Brookings Institution, about 150,000 people left the country this year, resulting in a net negative migration gain. Forecasts for 2026 indicate a possible increase in outflow.

As reported by The Wall Street Journal, the number of immigrants in 2025 dropped to 2.6-2.7 million, significantly lower than nearly 6 million in 2023.

Analysis of the situation in 15 countries with available data for 2025 showed that at least 180,000 Americans moved abroad.

According to the State Department, in 2022, there were 1.6 million Americans living in Mexico, over 250,000 in Canada, and more than 325,000 in the United Kingdom. In total, this amounts to over 1.5 million Americans residing in Europe.

Notably, there was a significant increase in the number of Americans in Portugal, where their population grew by more than 500 percent since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2024, the growth was 36 percent.

Ireland, for its part, welcomed 10,000 Americans in 2025, which is double the figures from the previous year. At the same time, more Americans moved to Germany than Germans to the U.S., according to the publication.

The main reasons for these changes were the increase in remote work, the high cost of living in the U.S., and new lifestyle preferences.

Previously, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security reported 675,000 deportations and 2.2 million cases of "self-deportation" last year.
