Mahabat Mavlyanova initiated a proposal to strengthen control over environmental risks
Deputy of the Jogorku Kenesh Mahabat Mavlyanova expressed her concerns regarding the potential threat of acid rain in Kyrgyzstan, which is linked to the ongoing geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East. She made these remarks during a meeting of the parliamentary committee dealing with issues of agricultural policy, water resources, ecology, and environmental protection.
Mavlyanova noted that after the attacks on oil refineries in this region, dangerous chemicals could have entered the atmosphere, potentially negatively impacting the environmental situation in other countries.
“There is information about chemical emissions as a result of strikes on oil refineries. There is clearly a risk that acid rain may occur during precipitation,” she reported.
The deputy also raised a question about the existence of mechanisms in Kyrgyzstan for monitoring such phenomena and which areas of the country might be at risk of acid rain. She suggested bringing this issue to discussion at the government level and enhancing the monitoring of environmental risks.
Asel Rayimkulova, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision, explained that the ministry does not directly engage in such monitoring. According to her, the "Kyrgyzhydromet" service is responsible for monitoring atmospheric processes and has automated weather stations.
