Today, at the meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh, deputies discussed and approved in the second reading amendments to several laws aimed at ensuring gender equality.

The initiative was developed by a group of deputies from the previous convocation. One of the key points is the amendment to the Law on the "Cabinet of Ministers," which stipulates that no more than 70 percent of representatives of one gender may be included in the cabinet.

Similar rules are also introduced for the competitive selection of judges for the Constitutional, Supreme, and local courts. The current legislation already mentions gender representation in the appointment of judges; however, it only applies to situations where the staff consists of five or more people.

Furthermore, the requirement that no more than 70 percent of members of one gender should be appointed extends to the positions of city mayors and akims, as well as to recruitment for public service.

The draft law also includes provisions for protection against violence and harassment in the workplace, equal pay for men and women, mandatory gender audits in public institutions, and other measures aimed at creating equal representation of men and women in various government structures.
