Today, January 20, the second reading of the bills concerning the Council for Justice Affairs, the Supreme Court, and the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic is taking place in the Jogorku Kenesh. The proposed amendments aim to improve gender equality.

During the discussion, Kamila Talieva reminded that Kyrgyzstan has signed Convention No. 190 of the International Labour Organization. This obliges the country to amend its legislation to combat violence and harassment in the workplace, as well as to achieve a more equitable gender balance.

The deputy emphasized that gender inequality still exists in the executive authorities. "Currently, out of 22 members of the government, there is only one woman, and just recently another one was appointed, but her appointment has not yet been confirmed. The remaining ministers are men. Meanwhile, representatives of the Cabinet of Ministers, while abroad, take pride in having signed the convention and having certain achievements in the field of gender equality," she noted.

Talieva also provided data from an analysis, according to which among 76 deputy ministers and heads of departments, only 13 are women, which is just 17%. There are no women in the representative offices, and among the deputy akims, there are about 35%. There has been only one woman akim in the country, but she recently became a deputy of the Jogorku Kenesh. Usually, women are appointed to the positions of deputy akims and governors for social issues, and women are also most often appointed to the positions of deputy prime ministers overseeing the social block. Out of 48 deputy mayors in the country, only 10 are women, which is about 20%," the deputy reported.
