South Korea has taken a step forward in technology regulation, becoming the first country in the world to implement a comprehensive law regarding artificial intelligence. This law came into effect in January 2026 and requires mandatory labeling of content created using AI, including images, videos, audio, and deepfakes. This was reported by Reuters.

This law, known as the AI Basic Act, establishes transparent requirements for the operation of AI services and mandates that users be informed when they are interacting with the results of artificial intelligence.

Particular attention is given to high-risk sectors such as healthcare, finance, transportation, and security. In these areas, the use of AI is permitted only under human oversight.

Penalties are provided for non-compliance with the established rules.

The authorities also announced a transitional period during which companies will be able to adapt to the new requirements without the risk of facing sanctions.

It should be noted that the law was passed by the South Korean parliament at the end of 2024. The main goal of this legislative act is to reduce risks associated with misinformation and the misuse of technologies such as deepfakes, as well as to increase public trust in new technological advancements.
