In 2025 and early 2026, the administration of Donald Trump held closed meetings with representatives of the Canadian organization Alberta Prosperity Project (APP), which advocates for Alberta's independence. This was reported by the Financial Times, citing sources in Washington and Canada.

During these meetings, which included officials from the U.S. State Department, the possibilities of a referendum on Alberta's independence and issues related to energy security were discussed. APP leaders claim a "high level" of contacts; however, there has been no official confirmation of their significance.

Representatives from the White House and the State Department confirmed that such meetings took place but noted that this does not imply support for separatism and does not place any obligations on Washington, including financial assistance or political recognition.

This information has sparked a flurry of discussions in Canada. Many politicians and experts viewed such actions as a possible interference in the country's internal affairs. Despite the activity of separatist groups, the authorities in Alberta do not officially support the idea of secession from Canada.

The Alberta Prosperity Project is a socio-political movement aimed at promoting the idea of Alberta's sovereignty and increasing the province's control over its energy resources. According to Canadian media, support for independence remains limited and does not have a majority among local residents.
