For two weeks now, mass protests have been ongoing in Iran, marking the most significant demonstrations in the past three years. On the eve of Saturday, residents of Tehran and other cities took to the streets again, despite internet shutdowns and actions by security forces aimed at dispersing the demonstrations. This is reported by BBC News.

The main cause of discontent has been sharp price fluctuations and a significant drop in the value of the Iranian rial, which has risen by 80 percent against the US dollar over the past year.

Soon, the economic demands of the protesters evolved into political slogans, including calls for the abolition of the Islamic Republic and the restoration of the monarchy.

Meanwhile, Reza Pahlavi, the son of the last Shah of Iran, urged protest participants to seize and hold city centers.

According to the human rights organization Human Rights Activist News Agency (HRANA), the number of protesters killed has reached around 50, while 15 security personnel have also lost their lives, and more than 2,300 people have been arrested.

The organization Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO), based in Norway, confirms the information about 50 fatalities, including nine children.

Doctors report that Farabi Hospital, the main ophthalmology center in Tehran, has been forced to switch to crisis mode due to the overload of emergency services. Staff have been urgently called in, and emergency hospitalizations and surgeries have been temporarily suspended.
