In the village of Zhashasyn, located in the Suzak district of the Jalal-Abad region, 32-year-old Nurtilek Usenov is the owner of five Taigans, which are one of the rarest breeds of greyhounds in the world — the Kyrgyz Taigan, known for its ancient history.

Nurtilek shares that each of his pets has a unique character. He has noticed that Taigans are quite sensitive: if they are shouted at during a hunt, they may start returning home or even stop running altogether. Caring for Taigans requires significant effort and patience.

In a conversation with a correspondent, Nurtilek mentioned that he became a Taigan owner in 2017. Initially, his mother was against it, but his father supported his passion, reminding him that the Kyrgyz people have kept these dogs for a long time. When Nurtilek is away, his mother takes care of the pets. The first Taigan he got was Ak-Tosh, followed by Algyr, who is currently a bit ill. According to Nurtilek, Ak-Tosh was excellent at guarding turkeys, but unfortunately, several of them were stolen. Later, he brought Pula from the Aksy district, who has given birth three times in five years.

“The first puppy is born, she licks it and dries it, and then she gives birth to the next one,” Nurtilek shares. He took care of her before the births, bringing her food, and this year Pula gave birth to eleven puppies, one of which, unfortunately, did not survive.

Each of the Taigans has its own characteristics. For example, Algyr has a strong spirit, while Ak-Tosh is very attentive and agile. Nurtilek notes that Taigans prefer praise and affectionate words, which affects their behavior during hunting. He also emphasizes that due to the sensitivity of Taigans, it is important not to scold them; otherwise, they may lose interest in hunting.

To train his dogs, Nurtilek first consulted with experienced breeders and then applied his own methods. He does not allow ordinary dogs near his Taigans, especially during their heat, to preserve their unique qualities. Additionally, Nurtilek keeps about 300 turkeys, and his Taigans often help in their protection, responding to danger.

Nurtilek prefers short-haired Taigans, as they feel better in winter conditions. He starts training the puppies at an early age by tying them to a horse and does not allow them to interact with ordinary dogs until they reach one year old, so they do not lose their natural courage.

In the future, Nurtilek intends to participate with his Taigans in various competitions and events; however, for now, his main goal is hunting.
