On Friday, the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets announced the start of an investigation into the popular American online platform Roblox. This decision was made due to potential security threats to underage users.
In its statement, the agency emphasized that "the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) is initiating an investigation to identify potential risks for children playing on the Roblox platform in the EU."
The investigation will focus on how effectively Roblox protects its young users.
The platform often comes under scrutiny due to concerns about violent or sexual game elements that children may encounter, as well as reports of predators attempting to contact minors. Additionally, there are questions about methods that may mislead users when making purchases.
The Authority for Consumers and Markets has also received numerous reports of such incidents and has been gathering information as part of a preliminary investigation in recent months.
It is worth noting that in October, the Dutch government announced an assessment of the risks associated with child safety on the Roblox platform, where incidents of violence, extortion, and unacceptable sexual behavior have been recorded.
