According to information voiced by Delcy Rodriguez, who is acting as president, the country's authorities intend to release all political prisoners and close the Caracas prison "Helicoid." This was reported by Euronews.

This statement was made by Rodriguez during her speech at the Supreme Court. She noted that a bill on general amnesty is being developed, which will pertain to the period of political violence from 1999 to the present day. This law is expected to be presented for consideration by the National Assembly soon.

Additionally, Rodriguez proposed to transform the "Helicoid" prison into a center for social and sports initiatives. According to human rights defenders, there are currently between 700 and 800 political prisoners in Venezuela.

The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado commented on the initiative, noting that it arose under pressure from the United States. She emphasized that this decision was not made voluntarily, and many prisoners have been in jail for over 20 years. At the same time, Machado expressed doubt about Delcy Rodriguez's ability to ensure the necessary trust and stability for political reforms.

The last amnesty in Venezuela was declared in 2007, when Hugo Chavez, as president, pardoned participants of the 2002 coup. In 2020, Nicolas Maduro signed 110 pardons ahead of parliamentary elections, which the opposition did not attend at that time.
