Uzbekistan has restricted the import of animals and products from India due to the threat of the Nipah virus

A temporary ban on the import of live animals and birds from India, as well as all types of animal products from West Bengal, has been introduced in Uzbekistan. This decision was made by the Chief State Veterinary Inspector of the country in response to an outbreak of the Nipah virus (NiV) in the specified region, as stated in the document.
These restrictions came into effect on January 29. The basis for this step was information from the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) regarding the complex epidemiological situation in India. The complete ban applies to imported products that are subject to veterinary control, with the exception of international transit.

To ensure the strictness of the new measures, regional inspectors have been instructed to strengthen control at borders and in regions, as well as to conduct explanatory activities for entrepreneurs. The veterinary service reserves the right to individually consider issues regarding the import of products from areas of India that are safe from an epizootic point of view.

The Nipah virus is a zoonotic infection capable of causing serious diseases in both animals and humans. The introduction of temporary measures is aimed at preventing its spread within Uzbekistan. The World Health Organization warns of the possibility of further spread of the virus, given the insufficient understanding of this infection. The organization urges authorities to enhance public awareness of potential risks.
