According to parliament information, 75 deputies voted for the resignation of Jeri, while 24 opposed it, and three abstained from voting.
José Jeri became the interim president on October 10, 2025, after the resignation of Dina Boluarte, which occurred against the backdrop of increasing crime in the country. His departure from office is part of a prolonged political crisis that has been observed in Peru since 2016, during which seven presidents have changed.
The investigation that initiated his resignation is related to a leak of information about an informal meeting Jeri had with two Chinese businessmen in December. One of these entrepreneurs has active government contracts, while the other is involved in a case of illegal logging. Jeri denies all accusations, claiming that the discussion was about preparing a cultural event.
The next step will be for parliament to elect a new interim president from among its members. This new leader will serve as the head of state until July 28, when elections are scheduled for April 12. José Jeri will return to his work in Congress until the current term ends.
The vote on the new interim president's candidacy is expected on Wednesday, when parliamentary factions will register their candidates.
