Telegram criticized for failing to comply with demands to remove extremist content
According to Russian media, Pavel Durov may become the subject of an investigation due to accusations of aiding terrorist activities.
The reason for these suspicions stems from claims against Telegram, which allegedly did not comply with the demands of Russian authorities to remove prohibited content.
Reports indicate that the platform did not delete over 10,500 channels containing calls for extremism, as well as 1,125 channels associated with terrorist and extremist organizations.
Additionally, 1,369 channels, chats, and bots related to child pornography have not been blocked, along with 3,771 channels distributing narcotic substances, 2,666 channels with suicide-related topics, and 2,124 channels where, according to law enforcement, minors are involved in criminal activities.
Citing data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the FSB, it is reported that since 2022, Telegram has been mentioned in the context of approximately 153,000 crimes, of which about 33,000 relate to sabotage-terrorist and extremist activities.
If the accusations are confirmed, Durov may face a punishment of imprisonment for a term ranging from eight years to life imprisonment.
