The U.S. President issued a serious warning about military consequences for Iran
On March 10, Donald Trump, the President of the United States, stated that Iran would face unprecedented military consequences if it is confirmed that it has laid mines in the Strait of Hormuz and does not remove them, reports Anadolu Agency.
In his message on the social network Truth Social, he emphasized: "If the mines are not removed immediately, the consequences for Iran will be unprecedented."
He also noted that removing the mines would be "a giant step in the right direction."
However, Trump added that the U.S. does not have confirmed information that Tehran has indeed laid mines in this strategically important waterway.
This warning came after CNN reported that Iran had begun laying mines in the strait. Sources indicated that only a few dozen mines have been laid so far, but Iran still has up to 90% of its mine-laying vessels and small boats, which gives it the capability to lay hundreds more mines.
The Strait of Hormuz is a key energy hub through which about 20 million barrels of oil pass daily. The IRGC previously announced the closure of the strait for transit following the start of U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28, which led to a rise in oil prices and concerns about long-term disruptions in energy supplies worldwide.
The conflict in the Middle East has escalated following a joint attack by Israel and the U.S. on Iran on February 28, resulting in the reported deaths of over 1,200 people, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Since the beginning of the conflict, at least eight U.S. servicemen have also been reported killed.
