AI can spread violence rather than prevent it - UN Secretary-General

The UN Secretary-General expressed concern about global instability

At the ceremony for the Mustafa Kemal Atatürk International Peace Prize in Turkey, António Guterres noted that modern technologies, including artificial intelligence, can pose serious threats, including the potential for increased violence rather than its prevention.

“Words about peace sound loud, but real actions are extremely few,” emphasized the head of the UN. He pointed out that international law is often violated, and the politics of power are becoming increasingly widespread, exacerbating global inequality.

Guterres stressed that the lack of adequate international control over new technologies could lead to their use for destabilization and violence.

Additionally, he expressed concern about rising military expenditures in various countries around the world, while humanitarian aid is being cut to critical levels, with civilians becoming the main victims of such changes.

The Secretary-General also addressed the situation in the Middle East, mentioning that large-scale attacks by the US and Israel, as well as Iran's retaliatory actions, pose a serious threat to international security.

“These actions have already caused immense harm to the civilian population. The region is under enormous pressure, which could lead to its collapse,” noted Guterres.

He added that the consequences of the conflict extend beyond the region, disrupting trade chains and increasing prices for energy and food, which in turn exacerbates global instability.

The UN Secretary-General believes that the only real way out of the current situation is de-escalation and diplomatic efforts.

During his visit to Turkey, he also received the Mustafa Kemal Atatürk International Peace Prize, noting that this award belongs to all UN staff who work to maintain peace and provide humanitarian assistance in various parts of the world.

Guterres also honored the memory of humanitarian workers, including UN staff, who died in the Gaza Strip, emphasizing that their sacrifice serves as a reminder of the high price paid by those who help in conflict zones.
