In the Iranian city of Qom, three men were executed who had been convicted of killing two police officers during protests earlier this year. This was reported by Reuters, citing Iranian state television.

The court found them guilty of murder, as well as "moharebeh" — "enmity against God," and actions taken in the interests of Israel and the United States. Iranian law enforcement reported that the men participated in armed attacks on police officers on January 8, which resulted in the deaths of two officers.

On March 18, Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard confirmed that a Swedish citizen had been executed in Iran. She noted that the man had been arrested in June 2025, and Swedish authorities had repeatedly attempted to secure his release.

Protests against the government began in Iran on December 28, 2025. The main reason was the worsening economic situation, including the collapse of the national currency and a sharp rise in prices. Unrest spread to numerous cities. According to Iran International, more than 36,500 people died during the protests on January 8-9. The independent human rights organization HRANA, based in the United States, confirmed the deaths of at least 7,000 civilians during the unrest in January. On January 21, the Attorney General of Iran stated that the protests had been completely suppressed.
