The USA has seized another tanker, presumably linked to Russia's 'shadow fleet'

In a statement from the Southern Command, it is noted that "this morning our joint interagency forces sent a clear signal again: there are no safe havens for criminals." The operation, carried out at dawn, was executed by Marines and sailors from the combined operational group "Southern Spear" with the support of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. They launched from the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford and successfully seized the tanker Olina in the Caribbean Sea without incident.

The statement also mentions that such operations are supported by the full might of the U.S. Navy's amphibious strike group, including the ships USS Iwo Jima, USS San Antonio, and USS Fort Lauderdale, which are ready for rapid deployment. "Operation 'Southern Spear,' conducted by the U.S. Department of Defense, continues its mission to protect the country by combating illegal activities and restoring security in the Western Hemisphere," the publication emphasizes.

According to The Bell, the registration number of the tanker Olina matches that of the tanker Minerva M, which was sanctioned by the U.S. in January 2025 as part of the "shadow fleet" involved in transporting Russian oil to circumvent Western restrictions.

According to Reuters, Olina is registered under the flag of East Timor. The last recorded location of the vessel was 52 days ago, in mid-November, when it was near the coast of Venezuela. Information about the tanker’s movements was obtained from the British marine risk management company Vanguard.

The seizure of Olina marked the fifth interception of a vessel as part of the operation targeting tankers involved in the export of Venezuelan oil. U.S. authorities estimate that about 70 percent of this export is controlled by vessels of the "shadow fleet."

Previously, the U.S. seized the tanker Bella 1 in the Atlantic Ocean, which belongs to a Russian company. This vessel had evaded U.S. military pursuit for more than two weeks while under the protection of Russian naval forces.

Russia characterized the seizure of the tanker as an illegal use of force.
