Train crash in Spain: the country has declared three days of mourning

As a result of the collision of two high-speed trains in southern Spain, the country has entered a three-day mourning period, as reported by the Kazinform agency, citing Euronews.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced a nationwide mourning while visiting the scene of the incident in the municipality of Adamus in the province of Córdoba, accompanied by Transport Minister Óscar Puente and the head of the Andalusian government, Juanma Moreno. The number of victims of the tragedy has risen to 41 people.

The causes of the incident remain unknown at this time.

Sánchez emphasized that "the truth will be established with complete transparency," noting that the investigation will require time and the efforts of specialists.

He called this day "a day of pain for the entire country," expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased, and wished a speedy recovery to all the injured, assuring that the state would provide the necessary support.

The CEO of the railway company Iryo, Carlos Bertumeu, stated that the train involved in the accident was put into operation less than three years ago and was equipped with modern safety systems, having passed all necessary inspections. He expressed readiness to cooperate with the investigation and provide all the company's resources to assist the victims and authorities.

The incident occurred on January 18 in the evening. A train operated by a private company, traveling from Malaga to Madrid, derailed and crossed onto an adjacent track, where it collided with a train on the Madrid-Huelva route. At the time of the accident, there were about 400 passengers on board both trains.
