The incident occurred on January 14 in Sikhiu, Nakhon Ratchasima Province (Korat), in the northeast of the country, according to local authorities.

Preliminary data indicate that the crane, which was being used for the construction of a high-speed railway bridge, fell as a train traveling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani was passing by. The crane's cable struck the locomotive, causing the train to derail. The second and third carriages of the train sustained the most damage.

At the time of the accident, there were about 190 passengers on the train, some of whom were trapped in the mangled carriages. Rescuers quickly arrived at the scene and helped evacuate the injured, including a child who was taken to a medical facility.

According to eyewitness accounts, they heard a sound resembling a crash before the crane fell, followed by the train suddenly braking and derailing.

As reported by the Bangkok Post, the under-construction railway bridge is on the Bangkok – Nakhon Ratchasima route, which is part of the Thai-Chinese high-speed railway.
