The collision occurred in the Korivayrachina area, where one of the trains returning from Machu Picchu crashed into another train heading to this archaeological complex. According to information provided by CNN, one of the victims was a railway worker.

According to the railway operator, service on the line connecting Machu Picchu and the city of Cusco has been suspended, and the causes of the collision remain unknown.

Videos published by local media show cars with damaged windows and sides stuck in a narrow section between a rock and dense forest.

Every year, about 1.5 million tourists visit Machu Picchu, most of whom reach Aguas Calientes by train. This complex, built by the Incas in the 15th century, served as a sanctuary for rulers and is one of Peru's most important tourist attractions. Over the past decade, the number of visitors has increased by approximately 25%, despite the fact that tourism in the region periodically suffers from political protests and conflicts over governance issues, including railway blockades.
