Tajikistan increased electricity exports by a third in 2025

At the end of 2025, Tajikistan was able to boast impressive figures in the energy sector, increasing electricity exports to 5.356 billion kWh. The main contribution to foreign currency earnings came from the republic's neighbors: Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan, which brought Tajikistan $97.3 million (913 million somoni).

The largest amount of electricity was supplied to Afghanistan, which purchased 1.8 billion kWh, equivalent to over $79 million. Uzbekistan imported about 900 million kWh, while supplies to Kyrgyzstan amounted to only 12 million kWh. It should be noted that most of the exports occurred during the spring-summer period when water levels in Tajik rivers were at their maximum.

Alongside the increase in exports, Tajikistan was also actively working to eliminate electricity shortages during the winter months. In 2025, electricity imports rose by 67%, reaching 2.7 billion kWh, with almost the entire volume purchased from Uzbekistan to meet the needs of the population and industrial enterprises.

The total electricity generation in the country approached 24 billion kWh, increasing by 6.5%. An important achievement was the reduction of technical losses in the electrical networks to 15% (approximately 4 billion kWh), indicating progress in the modernization of Tajikistan's energy infrastructure.
