In 2025, Tajikistan significantly increased its electricity exports, supplying 5.356 billion kWh to neighboring countries. This result exceeds last year's figures by 37.3%, corresponding to an increase of 1.454 billion kWh. This information was announced in the report of the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of the republic, as reported by "Asia-Plus".
Among the main countries purchasing Tajik electricity are:
▪️ Afghanistan, which purchased 1.8 billion kWh for 742 million somoni ($79.1 million), accounting for over 80% of the total exports to these three countries;
▪️ Uzbekistan, which imported 895 million kWh for 170 million somoni ($18.1 million);
▪️ Kyrgyzstan, which received 12 million kWh for 1 million somoni ($106.6 thousand).
As a result of electricity sales to these three countries, the republic earned 913 million somoni ($97.3 million), and the total volume of supplies amounted to 2.7 billion kWh.
The Ministry noted that the majority of exports, over 90%, occurred during the period from April to September, when there is an increase in river water levels.
The total electricity generation in Tajikistan in 2025 was nearly 24 billion kWh, which is 6.5% more than last year.
At the same time, the republic significantly increased its electricity imports. In 2025, Tajikistan purchased 2.7 billion kWh, which is 67% more compared to the previous year. The bulk of the imports, specifically 2.688 billion kWh, came during the winter months from Uzbekistan, while 13.9 million kWh was received from Kyrgyzstan, to which Tajikistan supplies electricity in the summer period.
Electricity losses in 2025 amounted to about 4 billion kWh, which is equal to 15% of the total production volume, and this is 3.6% less than in 2024.
