In Kyrgyzstan, the degradation of pastures has become a serious problem that arose due to the lack of systematic management after the collapse of the Soviet Union and uncontrolled grazing of livestock. This was reported by Natalia Kilyazova, head of the pasture and forage department at the Kyrgyz Scientific Research Institute of Animal Husbandry and Pastures, in an interview on the radio.

According to her, since 1991, pasture rotation and the use of pasture turnover have ceased in the country, and no improvement measures have been implemented.

“For two and a half decades, pastures have essentially remained uncontrolled. There were no opportunities for systematic management, and each farmer used the pastures at their discretion,” Kilyazova noted.

She added that the most significant degradation is observed in pastures located near populated areas.

“No one wanted to drive their animals to seasonal and summer pastures. As a result, the load on nearby areas has significantly increased, while remote pastures have begun to overgrow with weeds,” she explained.

Kilyazova also emphasized that uncontrolled grazing and high livestock concentration in areas with better forage contribute to the further deterioration of the situation.

“Everyone prefers pastures with higher quality vegetation, avoiding areas with shrubs. As a result, such territories quickly become depleted, while areas with bushes remain neglected,” the expert added.
